Mathematics Software for Linux

There are at least two sites which have a very detailed list of mathematics software available for Linux.

Both of these pages are very complete and highly recommended.

Symbolic - Able to manipulate equations with unbound variables. Useful for algebraic/trigonometric simplification, arbitrary differentiation, limited indefinite integration.

Numerical - Manipulates numbers only. Powerful calculator. Typically handles matricies, numeric integration, FFT, signal processing. We have a table which compares the features of the free packages.

Statistics & Data Visualization - Able to operate on large data sets and compute statistics efficiently. Can perform data modeling by least squares, etc. Able to present data graphically.

IDL - Commercial $1500. currently only a.out. New version for Slackware Pro comming soon. Includes 'Numerical Recipes' implementation.
xlisp-stat - statistics package based on lisp. Revieded in LJ Issue 16, August 1995
R - another statistics package based on lisp.

Image Processing -

Khoros Source freely available from ftp.khoral.com. CD and Manual for $225. Includes visual programming environment. Image and signal processing system. GUI builder and Visual programming environment. Matrix toolbox based on LAPACK. Includes Renderman ray tracing engine. VA Research will bundle with Linux boxes. *May* become part of Matlab in near future.
