Mathematics Software for Linux
There are at least two sites which have a very detailed list
of mathematics software available for Linux.
Both of these pages are very complete and highly recommended.
Symbolic - Able to manipulate equations with unbound variables.
Useful for algebraic/trigonometric simplification,
arbitrary differentiation, limited indefinite integration.
Numerical - Manipulates numbers only. Powerful calculator.
Typically handles matricies, numeric integration,
FFT, signal processing. We have a
table which compares the features of the free packages.
Statistics & Data Visualization -
Able to operate on large data sets and compute statistics
efficiently. Can perform data modeling by least squares, etc.
Able to present data graphically.
-
IDL

-
xlisp-stat

-
R
