Scott's been working on dividing up his lectures into decades for our LUG. His talk has been ready, we just need more fingers, ..er,ah people... to help do the publicity!
So, TONITE 6;30-9pm... Presenter: Scott Granneman is going to break it down into decades. So, why talk about all that old stuff? "To understand 'how we got here.'" is how all historians will point out that you want to know the history. What were the problems that we were trying to solve? We are living with the solutions...and the new problems caused by those solutions, so we should understand what was being attempted.
Back in January, Ed Howland told us about the "History of The Unix Shell". And, we learned the above usefulness of history. And in March, Scott started this series with "The History of Computing since 1968". In May, he did "the 1980". So, Scott will give us the decade by decade description of the important events & inventions in computing. And we understood what they have influenced in your problems today.
Back then, the push was to stop using those mainframe computers "in the clouds". Your data and your computing should be moved onto your own physical desktop on that new, powerful desktop computer! Things have changed....or reverted?
# Scott is a long time member and frequent presenter of SLUUG. He is the author of "The Linux Phrase Book" from O'Rieley Press as well as other books.
This Saint Louis MO, STL Linux Users Group (STLLUG) meets monthly to learn and talk about Linux. To avoid back-to-back meetings, this GNU/Linux Users Group usually holds its meetings ( eight days after ) on the second Thursday after the monthly meeting of the Saint Louis Unix Users Group (SLUUG). Eight days after would either be the third Thursday or the fourth Thursday of each month.
These meetings are free, public and open to all.
We begin gathering about 6:00PM to test microphones, screen sharing and webcams. At 6:30PM we start with introductions, announcements, current events of interest, and a general CALL-FOR-HELP segment. Then we will go into the presentation of our main topic, sometime after or around 6:45PM.
STLLUG is loosely affiliated with the St. Louis Unix Users Group (SLUUG), as one of its Special Interest Groups (SIG). Under SLUUG care, web page support is provided. Individual membership dues, fees or other charges are NOT required. These meetings are free, public and open to all.
Contact us if you have a presentation you would like to have considered for selection.
